While India seeks to take a swift turn to a EV revolution, the fact that it still relies on Crude Oil imports is hard to elude from. Since 87% of the nation’s crude oil is imported, an overall shift to the Sustainable mobility would require a strategic economic and environmental revolution first.
Being aware of the a cross dimension shift necessary for sustainable mobility to take the place of conventional transport, The government has been focusing on alternate fuels since they hold a key importance in India’s shift to sustainable mobility. During a recent MOU exchange ceremony between Toyota Kirloskar Motor and Ohmium international Nitin Gadkari Highlighted the predicament.
The Incumbent Road Transport and Highway Minister, spoke to the tune of recognizing the efforts necessary for the overall change. He highlighted the importance of a multi pronged approach aimed at developing facilities that make accessible use of ethanol blended fuels, Bio Diesel to compressed Biogas and Green Hydrogen. He further detailed that India is making headway in every facet of a sustainable mobility change.
Hydrogen Trucks: The Future To Commercial Mobility
The Government has already flagged off large scale Hydrogen truck trials across critical freight corridors. The project has been possible thanks to an investment of around Rs 500 crore under the National Green Hydrogen mission, as revealed By a HT Auto Report.
The Minister further elucidated that, Green Hydrogen is the long-term goal, but it’s important to ensure that the economics of the new development should work. He further welcomed all innovations that could churn out unconventional ways of producing hydrogen from Municipal solid waste, organic matter and even Bamboo plantations. Beyond that, he also detailed the resolute efforts that his ministry has been taking to develop a wide range of new clean fuel technologies. These would include 20% ethanol fuel blending in petrol all over the country and efforts to cut the crude oil prices.
The Government is further planning to support the launch of Hybrid cars capable of Ethanol compatibility. Besides that, the government is also planning to try out isobutanol- Diesel Blends to evaluate commercial suitability. The government is also planning the growth of compressed Biogas networks in rural areas. To ensure a steady headway into the new prospects of sustainable mobility, the government has already cleared 100% Ethanol use in flex fuel vehicles. Beyond that, the government is also planning to work on new IC retro fitment kits that would enable IC engines to work with Hydrogen and advanced Biofuels.
Nitin Gadkari further listed how the transformation for India’s auto industry has been valued at Rs 22 lakh crore, the third largest in the world.
Toyota’s Expanded Vision: Fuel Cell Technology
The Above mentioned details have been taken from Nitin Gadakri’s speech at the Toyota and Ohmium partnership ceremony, to develop Hydrogen power solutions in India. Toyota has pledged to use its expertise in Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles to support the nation’s growing needs for sustainable fuels for greener mobility. Under the new MOU TKM would supply advanced fuel cell modules , offering system integration and provide technical consultations.
Ohmium, a leader in PEM hydrogen electrolyzer technology, would design and evaluate the performance of Hydrogen driven Micro Grid prototypes suitable for real world use. With such advanced partnerships the company would be able to advance in hydrogen applications but also reinforcing its support for the country’s Make in India Initiative.
