New Delhi: Tata Motors, the homegrown carmaker, is currently the largest electric car manufacturer in the country. The domestic automaker started its journey with the Tata Nexon EV and now also has the Tata Tiago EV and Tata Tigor EV in its portfolio, giving the automaker an edge over other EV makers in terms of price parity as well as a huge number of options.

Tata vehicles

Tata Motors is not stopping there and has already announced a number of car launches in the coming years. With the existing portfolio being converted to electric vehicles, one can’t help but imagine all the old Tata vehicles coming back as EVs.

While Tata showcased the Tata Sierra EV concept at the Auto Expo, there are rumors that the Tata Nano could make a comeback as an electric vehicle. Following the introduction of BS6 emission norms in April 2020, Tata Motors discontinued the Nano hatchback. Former Tata Chairman Ratan Tata’s ambitious project was touted as the cheapest car in the world.

Despite a price tag starting at Rs 1 lakh, the Tata Nano failed to generate volume for the automaker in the country and was eventually discontinued. The small hatchback was offered with a 624cc twin-cylinder petrol engine producing 38bhp and 51Nm and a four-speed manual or AMT gearbox.

Nano Electric Launch

If rumors are to be believed, the automaker might be looking at re-launching the Tata Nano with an electric drive and we have already seen several concepts of the same running on Indian roads. Even Ratan Tata himself drives an electric Nano, modified to run on batteries.

The Tata Nano can be equipped with Tata Ziptron high voltage technology which consists of a permanent magnet synchronous electric motor with a smaller battery which is enough for a range of 250-300 km.
