Skoda and Volkswagen have finally revealed their plans To join the list of carmakers in India that are planning To launch Hybrid and EV cars in the country. The European brands are working on Strong Hybrid Midsize SUVs and Sedans that are likely to be launched by 2028.
Skoda-Volkswagen And Other Hybrid Cars To Be Based On IMP 21 Platform
The Hybrid SUV’s and Sedans from Volkswagen and Skoda would be underpinned by the IMP21 platform. The IMP (India Main Platform) is a derivative of the already existing CMP ( China Main Platform). Volkswagen is going to localize the manufacturing of the vehicles to such an extent that it can provide the EVs at the domestic cost structure and regulations. The CMP architecture is designed to support ICE , Strong Hybrids and Electric Powertrains.
The shift to producing Hybrid is part of a broader compliance strategy to meet CAFE 3 norms , along with the manufacturers long term goal to reach its electrification goals. While the specifics of the whole scenario remain under evaluation to localize and scale Hybrid options.
Volkswagen Skoda Hybrid Rivals
Skoda and Volkswagen Midsize Hybrid SUV will find rivals in upcoming models like that of the Third Gen Hyundai Creta, Second Gen KIA Seltos, New Renault Duster and Nissan Competitor. All of these vehicles would soon make it to the market with Strong Hybrid Powertrain options. At the moment only Maruti Suzuki and Toyota offer Hybrid Midsize SUVs, the Grand Vitara and Hyryder respectively. Meanwhile, Skoda and VW Hybrid sedans would face against the likes of Honda City e: HEV.
