While the official inauguration date is pending, the entire Purple Line is expected to begin soon following the security clearance for the Kengeri-Challaghatta section, recently granted by the Commissioner for Metro Rail Safety (CMRS).

Once inaugurated, the Purple Line will cover a total distance of 42.85 km, connecting Challaghatta in West Bengaluru to Whitefield (Kadugodi) in East Bengaluru. This development is expected to significantly alleviate traffic congestion in East Bengaluru during peak hours. Commuters can expect a 10-minute frequency between Challagatta and Whitefield (Kadugodi) during peak hours, with a five-minute headway between Pattandur Agrahara and Mysuru Road stations. There are also plans for short-loop services between Nadaprabhu Kempegowda Interchange Metro Station, Majestic, and MG Road/Byappanahalli.

The Metro journey from Challaghatta to Whitefield is estimated to take around 76 minutes, with an affordable end-to-end fare of Rs 60. Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) officials predict an increase in daily ridership from the current 6.2 lakh to 7 lakh passengers once the Whitefield-Challaghatta corridor is fully operational.

This milestone follows the inauguration of the Whitefield-KR Puram Metro section (13.7 km) by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 25, 2023. The completion of these pending stretches marks a significant achievement for Bengaluru’s metro system, making it the second-largest metro network in India after Delhi Metro’s 350.2 km.
