Dana Marie, an American national who is living in Bengaluru, suggested that NRIs living abroad should pay taxes to reduce the tax burden on Indian residents. She said, “Not equal but something,” as it helps Indians to deal with insane tax.
Talking about the crazy tax burden on Indians and some Indians wanting to move out of the country solely to avoid high taxes, Marie has pointed a finger at resident Indians, slamming them for being noisy animals while quoting her article.

Dana proposed her own way of reducing tax rates, writing, “NRI’s living abroad should pay taxes.” Once NRIs start paying taxes in India, she added, there would be a huge difference for the country in terms of not having a brain drain. Dana, the American woman living in India for the last few years, said.
“It’s a huge plus because it would completely change India. Not only for the revenues but also for keeping its best talent, perhaps pushing them to work or start a business in India rather than go abroad,” she wrote on Threads.

“It might help to relieve the insane tax burden on Indian residents. Some of whom are considering relocating just to have lower taxes,” Marie added.
Marie closed her post by stating that is not suggesting that NRIs pay the same taxes as Indians, but rather that they at least contribute something.
The post proved controversial on the platform and received very mixed reactions. Indirect taxes, like income tax, are intended to assist with infrastructure, public services, and governance within a country, to which one is a resident and receives all benefits from. It is absurd to expect NRIs to pay income tax because they are, by definition, not habitual residents of India and therefore do not access these services daily,” said one user.
“If the Indian Government taxes NRIs, this category will never wish to come back to India again,” said another. NRIs too are a part of India’s growth, said Mitesh Aswani, who works in Dubai. “We do so already, via NRO funds, via property and sales taxes, taxation on investments done in India…And you cannot even begin to imagine the amounts of funds/investments NRIs bring into India…Ignorance truly shines,” he said.
