Bengaluru Building Collapse: Death Toll Rises To Five; Several Still Trapped

Karnataka Deputy CM DK Shivakumar has ordered action against the owners of buildings responsible for illegal construction without permission.

Five people died and five were injured after an under construction building collapsed in Bengaluru on Tuesday. The incident occurred in Horamavu Agara area of eastern Bengaluru amid heavy rainfall around 4 pm yesterday. The rescue operation was jointly carried by Hennur Police, BBMP officials and fire services department soon after the incident. NDRF, SDRF later carried on the rescue work and it is still underway. There were 20 labourers at the site when the under construction building collapsed. As per reports, the building was constructed without an official permission from the civic authorities of the city.

DCP East Bengaluru informed about the total number of death so far. DCP said that so far 5 bodies have been recovered, 5 people are injured, and 4 of them have been admitted to North Hospital and another one to Hosmat Hospital.

According to Additional Commissioner of Police, Bengaluru, N Satheesh Kumar, the deceased have been identified as Harman (26), Tripal (35), Mohd Sahil (19), Sathya Raju (25) and Shankar.

The injured people have been identified as Jagadevi, Rasheed, Nagaraju, Ramesh Kumar, Harman and Ayaj. Five injured are undergoing treatment at Bengaluru North Hospital while injured have been admitted to Hosmat Hospital. Seven people were rescued today and now the total number of rescued individuals stands at 13.

It is reported that several others are still feared trapped under the debris of the collapsed building.

Speaking to ANI, Vakeel Paswan, a labourer who jumped off the building to save himself, said that he is unable to understand anything. He added, “Of the four of us, three of us came out. The fourth one got stuck…I am unable to understand anything, I was working on the 6th floor, I worked as a labourer…We worked and stayed here.”

Karnataka Deputy CM Takes Stock Of The Situation

Karnataka Deputy CM DK Shivakumar had arrived and inspected the site later in the night. He said that an action has been ordered against the owners of buildings responsible for illegal construction without permission. He wrote on X, “This incident is a lesson for us. To prevent such incidents from reoccurring in the future, it will be made mandatory to obtain permission for the buildings and a team will be deployed to monitor the buildings under construction.”

Deputy CM said, “Last night, I visited and inspected the site where the under-construction building collapsed and the workers were trapped under the debris at Babusab Palya in Kammanahalli. It is a big crime to construct a building illegally in this way on 60/40 land. Apparently, the owner of the building is constructing the building without plan approval and strict action will be taken against the culprits.”

He informed that one person was confirmed dead and 21 people were trapped under the debris. 14 people were rescued and seven of them were admitted to the hospital. The search for the others continues. He also lauded NDRF, SDRF rescue team, fire brigade and police foe their rescue efforts.

Dog Squad also joined the rescue operation in the morning.
