The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) plans to restore 41 ponds located in the North Chennai zones of Thiruvottiyur, Manali, Madhavaram, and Tondiarpet at a cost estimate of Rs 119.12 crore.
The restoration works will include desilting, deepening, bund strengthening, and construction of retaining walls. The Manali zone will see the most amount of work at the Manali zone, with 28 ponds at a cost estimate of Rs 58.43 crore. In Thiruvottiyur, 4 ponds will be restored at a cost estimate of Rs 28.9 crore.
The Madhavaram zone will see 4 ponds restored for a cost estimate of Rs 11-crore. In the Tondiarpet, Rs 20.97 crores will be allocated to 5 projects.
In addition to this, the GCC is undertaking another 5 pond restoration projects directly, with a cost estimate of Rs 25.25 crores from GCC’s capital fund. The GCC has also added 4 new ponds to the Guindy area, with a storage capacity of 2.28 lakh cubic meters to reduce flooding.
