To control the rising vehicle pollution in Delhi, a strict rule has been implemented from July 1, 2025. Now petrol or diesel will not be given to old i.e. End of Life (EoL) vehicles at any petrol pump in the capital. This decision has been taken on the instructions of the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM), in whose implementation Delhi Transport Department, Delhi Police and traffic personnel are jointly participating.
According to the new rules, diesel vehicles older than 10 years and petrol vehicles older than 15 years will no longer be able to get fuel from petrol pumps.
To ensure compliance with this instruction, traffic police officers will be deployed at 350 selected petrol pumps in Delhi. Also, teams of Municipal Corporation (MCD) and Delhi Police will also be involved in monitoring.
Delhi Police will be deployed from petrol pump number 1 to 100. 59 special teams of the Transport Department will monitor pump numbers 101 to 159. Two policemen will be present at every pump to maintain law and order. The traffic police will have the right to seize old vehicles or challan their owners.
As per the SOP (standard operating procedure), All petrol pumps will have to maintain a digital or manual register of cases of refusal to give fuel to such vehicles.
ANPR camera systems will be installed at all pumps, which will scan the number plates of vehicles and display their information immediately. The responsibility for this has been entrusted to DTIDC.
Strict Penalties
The information of pumps that do not follow the rules will be sent to CAQM and the Petroleum Ministry every week. Violators will be fined under Section 192 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.
The Supreme Court had banned 10-year-old diesel and 15-year-old petrol vehicles in Delhi in 2018. In 2014, the NGT had also banned parking of 15-year-old vehicles in public places.
