Delhi Pollution: Air Quality Improves To ‘Moderate’ After 50 Days; Will The Relief Last In The Coming Days?

It is observed that the air quality may fluctuate in the coming days, returning to the 'poor' category from moderate but it is likely to stay below 300 in many areas of Delhi.

Delhi Pollution: After battling ‘very poor’ and ‘severe’ air quality for nearly two months, Delhi saw a significant improvement in pollution levels. The AQI dropped to the ‘moderate category on Wednesday, providing Delhiites with the cleanest air day in December this year. The AQI in Delhi has improved to 128 under the ‘moderate’ category today.

According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the AQI was reported as 145 in Ashok Vihar, 147 in Wajipur, 220 in Mundka, 198 in Jahangirpuri, 184 in Narela, 204 in R.K Puram, 178 in Anand Vihar, 169 in Pusa, and 152 in Punjabi Bagh as of 6 am on Thursday. By 4 pm on Wednesday, the 24-hour average AQI was recorded at 178 (moderate) in the capital which had been enduring hazardous air for weeks.

Will The Relief Last In The Coming Days? An Outlook

It is observed that the air quality may fluctuate in the coming days, returning to the ‘poor’ category from ‘moderate’ on Friday and thereafter. However, AQI is likely to stay below 300 in many areas of Delhi.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted a surge in pollution levels after December 7 as a result of a fresh western disturbance. As per the Early Warning System (EWS) for Delhi, moderate fog and slower winds are expected in the city after wind speed was recorded at 20 km/hr on Wednesday.

Ongoing Efforts

Authorities are currently monitoring the situation closely to curb the pollution. Stringent anti-pollution measures under the Graded Action Response Plan (GRAP) are enforced in Delhi in the face of rising pollution levels during the winter season.
