Anurag Kashyap Issues Apology After Controversial Remark On Brahmin Community: ‘Please Spare Women….’

Renowned filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has issued a public apology following backlash over a recent controversial remark that stirred criticism across social media platforms.

Indian filmmaker-actor Anurag Kashyap has been involved in another controversy. This started when he responded to a comment from a user on social media, which allegedly harmed the sentiments of the Brahmin community. On Friday night, he issued a public apology to address the misunderstandings. This remark came when most of the people were talking about the movie Phule, which is dedicated to two great social reformers, Jyotiba and Savitribai Phule.

Anurag’s provocative statement spread quickly on social media, which made a lot of people angry. So, for this, he took to his Instagram handle and wrote a message to explain publicly what he meant. He said his intent was not to harm anyone’s emotions; even if the people are angry, they should not involve their family in it. “No action or speech is worth your daughter, family, or friends,” the actor wrote.

“This is my apology, not for my post, but for that one line taken out of context and the brewing hatred,” Anurag added. “No action or speech is worth your daughter, family, friends and colleagues getting rape and death threats from the kingpins of sanskar. So, what has been said cannot be taken back — and I won’t take it back. But if you want to abuse someone, direct it at me. My family has neither said anything nor do they ever speak out (sic).”

He further asked the public, “So, if it’s an apology you’re looking for, then this is my apology. Brahmins, please spare the women — even the scriptures teach this much decency, not just Manusmriti. Decide for yourselves what kind of Brahmins you truly are. As for me, I offer my apology (sic).”

For the uninformed, this controversy started when Anurag replied to a social media user, who commented, “Brahmins tumhare baap hain. Jitna tumhari unse sulgegi utna tumhari sulgaayenge (Brahmins are your fathers. The more you mess with them, the more they will burn you).” Over this statement, Anurag responded, “Brahmin pe main mootoonga..koi problem? (I will urinate on Brahmins… any problem?).

Anurag Kashyap’s new movie Phule will release soon in theaters, which is a biography of two social reformers of Indian Society who played their major role in the development of Indian society by raising their voice against Child marriage and the promotion of girls’ education. The movie stars Pratik Gandhi, Darsheel Safary and Patralekha Paul under the direction of Ananth Mahadevan. Earlier, this movie was said to be released on April 11, 2025, but now its release date has been delayed after the Censor Board suggested some changes. Some groups, like the Akhil Bhartiya Brahmin Samaj, were unhappy as they said the movie shows their community in a bad way.
