Director E. Niwas Looks Back On 24 Years Of Love Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega

Love Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega is a 2001 crime comedy film directed by Eeshwar Nivas and produced by Ram Gopal Varma and Nitin Manmohan. The film is an official remake of the 1993 Telugu film Money.

After delivering the hard-hitting Shool, director E. Niwas took a surprising turn into comedy with Love Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega a madcap caper that brought together a star-studded ensemble and unforgettable moments of laughter. In this conversation, he looks back on the film’s making, cast, music, and the shift in genres.

After doing serious stuff you suddenly swerved to comedy?
After Shool, such an intense plot, and gritty process of making it, I wanted to shift the genre to ease myself as a filmmaker, so this crazy comedy Love Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega happened.

It featured an absolutely crazy cast?
It was a madcap ensemble: Saif Ali Khan, Fardeen Khan, Aftab Shivdasani, Twinkle Khanna, Sonali Bendre. And above all, Aslam Bhai played by Johny Lever. Till today people come to me quoting those scenes and lines. A laugh riot then and now, 24 years later… Uffff time flies.

The music was quite a hit?
It has my favourite music tracks composed by Vishal Bharadwaj… Rama Rama track, title track of Love Ke Liye Saala Kuch Bhi Karega, and of course Aslam Bhai.

Wasn’t it based on a Hollywood film?
It’s loosely based on Joel Coen’s Fargo and a film which my producer Ram Gopal Varmajee produced in the South, a film called Money.

What was it like working with Saif?
Working with Saif was absolutely brilliant. In fact, his comic timing was impeccable.

Did you enjoy the shift from the serious Shool to the comic Love Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega?
Yes, doing a sitcom is a total shift from an intense drama. Here, timing and chemistry and a little bit of exaggeration at times, are needed. Overall, it was a light-hearted set with this ensemble.
