According to a Vermont State Police statement, a Honda SUV was turning left into a parking lot shortly before 5 p.m. when it collided with Williams’ motorcycle in the town of Dorset.

“Williams was unable to avoid a collision and was thrown from his motorcycle. He suffered critical injuries and was airlifted to Albany Medical Center in Albany, New York, where he was pronounced dead,” according to the statement. According to authorities, Williams was wearing a helmet.

William Baldwin, an actor, lamented Williams’ passing. On Twitter, he made an emotional post.

The driver of the SUV suffered minor injuries and was not hospitalised. He had signalled the turn and was not immediately apprehended, according to police, though the crash investigation was ongoing.

The Connecticut native Williams made his film debut in 1975 as a police officer in the film Deadly Hero, and he has since appeared in over 120 TV and film roles, including The Eagle Has Landed, Prince of the City, and Once Upon a Time in America.

He received a Golden Globe nomination for his performance as hippy leader George Berger in the 1979 film adaptation of the smash musical Hair.

He featured in scores of television episodes, but he was arguably best known for his main part in Everwood from 2002 to 2006 as Dr Andrew Brown, a widower Manhattan brain surgeon who relocates with his two children to the Colorado mountain town of the same name.
