Mohanlal’s much anticipated film, L2: Empuraan was finally released released yesterday setting an unimaginable record on its opening day. The Prithviraj Sukumaran directed mass entertainer has received lot of love from the audience. But the film seems to have run into controversy over its depiction of the alleged Gujarat riots.
CBFC’s Intervention
According to a report by Times Of India, the CBFC has reviewed the movie and found certain sequences depicting Gujarat riots to be sensitive. A a result the board mandated 17 cuts and modifications which includes trimming of some scenes as well. Reportedly the makers of the film have agreed to the changes. Producer Gokulam Gopalan said that he has instructed L2: Empuraan director Prithviraj to make the changes “if any scenes or dialogues in the movie had hurt anyone”.Censorship of films based on political or historical events is not uncommon, especially in India, where certain depictions can lead to widespread debates and opposition.

The movie is the second installment of the film Lucifer which was released in the year 2019. L2: Empuraan explores themes of political drama with high stakes action. The makers have also planned to take L2: Empuraan to the pan-Indian level, With its over-the-top storyline, strong performances and top-shelf production values, the film aims to to redefine the boundaries of Malayalam cinema and cement its place among the biggest blockbusters in Indian film history.

The supporting star cast of the film include Tovino Thomas as Jathin Ramdas, Indrajit Sukumaran as Govardhan Manju Warrier as Priyadarshini Ramdas and Suraj Venjaramoodu as Sanjanachaandran. Each character is expected to bring their own intrigue to the story which could make the film an overall grand cinematic experience.
