Suriya is back in theatres with Karthik Subbaraj’s directorial ‘Retro’, also starring Pooja Hedge in the lead role. The movie focuses on a former gangster trying to live a peaceful life after getting married but things changes but his past gets in the way. Retro also marks Suriya return to the big screens after the debacle of Kanguva and fans have high expectations from the film.
Meanwhile, the makers have reportedly secured the OTT rights of Retro with a big streaming platform. According to reports, Retro will release on Netflix after theatres. It is likely to arrive on OTT in June or July 2025 as the movies usually have 45 to 60 days OTT window.
Directed by Karthik Subbaraj, the movie also stars Joju George, Jayaram and Karunakaran.
It was rumoured that Retro was first offered to Thalapathy Vijay. But director Karthik Subbaraj clarified that the movie was not written for Vijay but for superstar Rajinikanth. In an interview, he revealed, “This story was not written for Thalapathy Vijay sir, as being speculated. I wrote this script keeping in mind Thalaivar. Initially, it was more in the action zone to suit Thalaivar’s image. After narrating it to Suriya sir, it was changed to a love story. Even Suriya sir asked me if I narrated the script to Rajinikanth sir.”
Apart from Suriya and Pooja, the movie also stars Karunakaran, Nassar, Prakash Raj, Joju George, Jayaram, Sujith Shankar, and Singampuli in key roles. Shriya Saran will be seen in a cameo role.
On the work front, Suriya was last seen in the movie ‘Kanguva’ but it did not work well at the box office. The movie also starred Bobby Deol, Disha Patani, Natty Subramaniam, K. S. Ravikumar, Yogi Babu, Redin Kingsley, Kovai Sarala, Ravi Raghavendra and Karunas.
