Indian rapper Raftaar criticised Canadian rapper of Indian origin, Tommy Genesis, for disrespecting Hinduism in one of her latest music video, “True Blue”. The video was released on June 20, in that music video Tommy Genesis was seen painted blue, wearing gold jewellery and a red bindi. Her look resembled a Hindu Goddess and this has caused massive outrage on social media.
Raftaar took to his Instagram story and criticised the video. He said that he was offended by it and even went ahead to report to YouTube, providing a screenshot of the report. He wrote, “This is a mockery of my religion. This shouldn’t exist.” He added, “Report This”, asking his followers to do the same and help get the video removed from YouTube.
Her appearance gave many audiences the impression of a Hindu Goddess, and many considered this insulting. She is also seen using a cross as a prop and making inappropriate gestures such as licking it and these aspects have been offensive to both the Hindu and Christian groups.
There are aggressive responses all over social media because the majority of people think that the video disrespected religion and culture. One of the remarkers said, “This is how they demean Indian culture”. Another wrote, “Ma kali is mother of universe. we worship her as protector of innocents. For years invaders. colonizers have hated our goddesses and mocked us. Now disrespecting our culture for clout is a new level of low”. Another commented, She is our mother.. you have no right to disrespect her like this… HOW DARE YOU”. One wrote, “Such cheapness shows her greed for views. She will definitely face the consequences in the future!”. Another user said, “Report please. It’s wrong to misuse any religion for such acts. As sensible individuals. it’s our responsibility to raise our voice against it and stand up for respect and understanding.”
