In a shocking incident that took place on Sunday, a 22-year-old student at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur was found dead in his hostel room. The deceased, identified as Aniket Walkar, was a native of Maharashtra’s Gondia district and was in the fourth year. Kharagpur Police found his body hanging in his hostel room and suspected suicide.
Police Suspect Suicide
A Senior Police Official told Mint, “Primarily, it seems to be a case of unnatural death. The deceased has died by suicide. But we are waiting for the post-mortem report to confirm.” Meanwhile, an email from the institute read, “We mourn the loss of our beloved student and urge anyone in need of support to approach the counselling services available.”
Deceased Found Hanging By His Classmates
The deceased’s body, found hanging by his classmates, was later sent to the Kharagpur Sub-district Hospital for further medical procedures. At the same time, police have filed a case of unnatural death, however, the reason behind his death is not known yet.
Second Such Case In 2025
Earlier in January, another student, Shaon Malik, studying at IIT-Kharagpur, was found dead inside his hostel room. The deceased, identified as a third-year student of Electrical Engineering, was found hanging by his parents. They forcibly opened the hostel door after he did not answer their repeated calls.
