The Uttar Pradesh education department is set to close about 27,000 basic schools in the state as part of a new initiative to streamline educational resources. This decision primarily targets schools with enrollments of fewer than 50 students.
Review Meeting Insights
On October 23, Director General of Education Kanchan Verma held a review meeting where she directed Block School Administrators (BSAs) to assess and prepare for merging these underperforming schools. The main goal is to consolidate resources by integrating schools with low student numbers into nearby schools that have higher enrollments.
Current Enrollment Statistics
There are currently 27,764 basic schools in Uttar Pradesh that have fewer than 50 students. To support the consolidation plan, students from these schools will be moved to nearby facilities to ensure their education continues without interruption. BSAs have been asked to submit their merger reports by November 14.

Focus on Educational Efficiency
The review highlighted the Indian government’s commitment to making schools more practical and efficient. Education officials are tasked with creating a framework to identify which schools are suitable for merging, considering factors such as transportation, student accessibility, and geographical elements like canals and highways.
Documentation and Follow-Up Actions
Each school will need to provide a one-page report on its current status. Additionally, a detailed booklet listing all affected schools will be compiled for district-level review. A follow-up meeting with all BSAs is scheduled for November 14 to discuss the initiative’s progress.
