The incident took place shortly after the aircraft took off at the Ahmedabad airport.
171 Flight Number Back In Spotlight
The Indian Airlines Flight AI171, operating Ahmedabad-London Gatwick, which was involved in the unfortunate incident today, has a strikingly similar number to the Caravelle plane that crashed on October 12, 1976. The event, which dates back to 1976, in which 95 passengers were killed, is identical to the one that occurred today.
In 1976, the incident occurred while the plane was attempting to make an emergency landing at Bombay Airport. It is said that the Metal Fatigue in a compressor disc had led to the casing rupture. It caused a cut in the fuel lines and ignited an engine fire, following which the flight went out of control. Indian AI171 was a scheduled domestic flight en route from Bombay to Madras.
