Air India Crash: Tata Sons Announces Rs 1 Crore Ex-Gratia For Families Of Victims

The Tata Group posted on X, “We are deeply anguished by the tragic event involving Air India Flight 171. No words can adequately express the grief we feel at this moment. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families who have lost their loved ones, and with those who have been injured. Tata Group will provide ₹1 crore to the families of each person who has lost their life in this tragedy. We will also cover the medical expenses of those injured and ensure that they receive all necessary care and support."

PM Modi expressed grief over tragic crash

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow over the tragic incident in Ahmedabad, terming it “heartbreaking beyond words.”

In a post on X, PM Modi conveyed his condolences and assured assistance to those affected.
According to the post, PM Modi has been closely monitoring the situation and is in constant communication with state authorities.

“The tragedy in Ahmedabad has stunned and saddened us. It is heartbreaking beyond words. In this sad hour, my thoughts are with everyone affected by it. Have been in touch with Ministers and authorities who are working to assist those affected,” the Prime Minister wrote.

Air India confirmed that flight Al171, which was destined for Gatwick in London, was involved in an accident today after taking off from the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.

Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crashed shortly after take-off

The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, carrying 242 people, including 12 crew members, crashed shortly after take-off from the Airport.

The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crashed into the doctors’ hostel near the airport perimeter.

Air India said that among the 230 passengers, 169 were Indians, 53 British, seven Portuguese and one Canadian national.

Aircraft was under the command of Capt Sumeet Sabharwal

The aircraft was under the command of Capt Sumeet Sabharwal with First Officer Clive Kundar. Capt Sumeet Sabharwal is an LTC with 8200 hours of experience. The official added that the copilot had 1100 hours of flying experience.

As per ATC, the aircraft departed from Ahmedabad at 1339 IST (0809 UTC) from runway 23. It made a Mayday call to ATC, but thereafter, the aircraft did not respond to the calls made by ATC. Aircraft immediately after departure from Runway 23, fell on the ground outside the airport perimeter. The official said that heavy black smoke was seen coming from the accident site.
