There are various ongoing expressway projects, which are under process with aim to transform cities and boost connectivity. One such expressway is Guwahati to Silchar Expressway. This expressway will be Assam’s first expressway. It will connect Assam’s capital with Silchar. Once operational this route will boost connectivity. This expressway will have four lanes.
The Assam government plans to construct its inaugural expressway, requiring a Rs 25,000-crore investment to connect Guwahati with Silchar. The expressway route, starting from Umiam (Barapani) in Meghalaya, will reduce the travel time to just 4 hours. A scheduled event in Guwahati will see the announcement of infrastructure projects worth Rs 1 lakh crore as part of a development initiative.

The selection of Umiam, a popular tourist area, as the route was aimed at boosting economic trade and tourism activities between Assam and Meghalaya. Industrial facilities in Panchgram will gain better access through this four-lane road, as Panchgram serves as a major commercial center with its paper mill operations and other businesses. This project will enhance the connectivity in the region.
