BMC Uses 7 Trucks To Clear Heaps Of Garbage, Bottles And Slippers From Marine Drive After Victory Parade

Thousands cheered the victorious Indian T20 World Cup team at Marine Drive, leaving a trail of litter, including plastic bottles and footwear, later cleaned up by BMC.

People swarmed the shoreline of Marine Drive to give a grand welcome to the victorious Indian T20 World Cup team. While enthusiastically cheering their heroes, the crowd also left behind a somber sight of litter scattered along the seafront, including plastic bottles and footwear. Local authorities later collected this waste in seven trucks.

Following the victory parade, BMC stated on Friday that a cleanliness drive continued through Thursday and Friday nights. Thousands of fans thronged Marine Drive in South Mumbai on Thursday evening to witness the victory parade of the Indian cricket team. The parade, starting from the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) at Nariman Point in an open bus after 7:30 PM, concluded at Wankhede Stadium.

However, due to the large crowd, it took more than an hour and a half to conduct the parade, which typically takes five minutes to cover the distance between these two points. This massive gathering also left heaps of garbage behind, with shoes and water bottles scattered on the road where the victory parade passed.

Late Night Cleaning

The cleanliness campaign started at 11:30 PM on Thursday and concluded at 8:00 AM on Friday, with participation from around a hundred employees of the Solid Waste Management Department and some volunteers from non-governmental organizations. This operation was deemed necessary to quickly clear Marine Drive once again for the morning walks and exercises of the public, which are popular activities there every morning.

Recycling Garbage

During the cleanliness campaign, BMC reported collecting a large number of food items, water bottles, and wrappers, along with a substantial quantity of shoes and slippers. During the operation, they used five jeeps to collect the shoes and slippers, and two dumpers lifted the garbage from the site. The municipal corporation announced that rather than dumping this waste at the landfill, they would send all these items to a recycling plant.
