Polling On October 1

Haryana will go to polls on October 1, 2024, and the results will be declared on October 4, 2024. Assembly elections will also be held in J&K along with Haryana.  The 90-member Haryana Assembly is due to expire on November 3, 2024.

Haryana Assembly Election: Major Parties

The major parties to participate in the election are the BJP, AAP, Congress, the JJP-ASP alliance, and the BSP-INLD alliance.

At a time when the BJP is struggling in Haryana, the Congress Party is looking to wrest power from the saffron outfit, that has been in government since 2014.

Haryana Assembly Election: Main Issues

The major election issues in Haryana are the Agnipath military recruitment scheme, the farmers’ protest over the guarantee for Minimum Support Price (MSP), and the sexual assault allegations leveled by several wrestlers from the state.

In the Haryana Assembly Election held in 2019, the BJP emerged as the largest party with 40 seats, but it failed to get a majority. Congress won 31 seats while the JJP bagged 10 seats. The BJP joined hands with the JJP and formed a coalition government. But differences cropped up soon and the coalition collapsed this year. The JJP pulled out.

Hooda Rules Out Alliance With AAP

Though it was initially reported that the Congress Party would contest the election with the AAP, but later former Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda said no talks have been held with any party for an alliance. Indicating that the party may not have a tie-up with the AAP in the state, he said, “We have an alliance at the national level (with the AAP) but as far as state level is concerned, no talks have been held with any party… The Congress is capable (of winning) on its own. No talks have been held yet.”
