The schedule of the upcoming Lok Sabha Elections 2024 will be announced on March 16 at 3 pm, said the Election Commission of India on Friday.

Taking the matter to X (formerly Twitter), an EC spokesperson informed that the press conference for the announcement of the schedule of the general elections will be held at 3 pm on Saturday.

The poll panel’s announcement follows the recent assumption of office by newly-appointed election commissioners Gyanesh Kumar and Sukhbir Singh Sandhu on Friday. These appointments were made by the selection panel led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday. In 2019, the Lok Sabha poll dates were declared on March 10, with polling taking place in seven phases from April 11 to May 19 to elect members of the 17th Lok Sabha.

Soon after the ECI’s announcement, the Model Code of Conduct comes into effect, which bars the government in power from announcing any new policy decisions. The current term of the Lok Sabha house ends on June 16 and the new Lok Sabha House has to be constituted before that.

The announcement sets stage for a fierce battle between the Narendra Modi-led NDA alliance and INDIA alliance – which consists of 27 opposition parties.
