Delhi’s Air Quality Remains ‘Severe’: GRAP Stage -III Restrictions Imposed, How Delhi Government Is Battling With Pollution?

In view of the increasing pollution in Delhi, the Delhi government has implemented GRAP-3. Delhi Environment minister held a high-level meeting with all the concerned departments for its better implementation.

The Air Quality Index remains in ‘severe’ category as of 6 am in the key areas of Delhi, according to Central Pollution Control Board. With air quality degrading in the national capital, the Delhi government has implemented GRAP Stage-III restrictions.

Pollution Level At Different Area In Delhi

According to Central Pollution Control Board, area such as Alipur observed AQI of 433, Anand Vihar with 436 AQI and Ashok Vihar as 438 AQI as of 6 am. Seeing the condition of air, Delhi government implemented GRAP-Stage-III restrictions on Friday.

Several other places in Delhi witnessed a ‘severe’ AQI, Dwarka with 418 AQI, IGI Airport with 370 AQI, RK Puram with 398 AQI, Lodhi Road with 406 AQI, Gokalpuri with 347 AQI, Rohini with 426 AQI, ITO  with 355 AQI and Mundka 434 with AQI.

Action Taken By Government So Far

The construction and demolition work going on in Delhi has been stopped and BS-3 petrol and BS-4 diesel vehicles have been banned and instructions have been given to spray water intensively throughout Delhi.

Gopal Rai said, that “Vehicular pollution is making a major impact on the levels of pollution existing right now. So, BS-III petrol and BS-IV four-wheelers have been banned in Delhi. Similarly, medium-sized vehicles will be banned in Delhi – irrespective of whether they are registered here or outside. A complete ban has been imposed on BS-III and BS-IV diesel buses coming from outside, only CNG, Electric and BS-VI buses will be allowed entry in Delhi.”

He further mentioned that, “or this, 84 teams of Transport department are being formed. 280 teams of Traffic Police will patrol and work on the ground at various locations for implementation of the same. Wherever a violation is found, a fine of Rs 20,000 will be imposed.”

Delhi CM Atishi announced the timing of government offices to ease the traffic and deal with the pollution level.

Central Government Offices: 9am – 5:30 pm

Delhi Government Offices: 10 am- 6:30 pm.

MCD: 830 am to 5 pm

What is GRAP Stage-III?

These are the different measure which comes under this GRAP-Stage III.

Restriction On Vehicles: Private BS III petrol and BS IV diesel vehicles are banned under this stage of restriction. Restriction of non-electric and CNG busses coming from different state is prohibited. Office timing for government employees have been adjusted to ease traffic jam. And certain category of construction activity in the national capital is prohibited.

The Air Quality Index in Delhi is above 400 even on Saturday. AQI has been recorded at dangerous levels in many areas of Delhi. The level of pollution can prove to be very harmful for the health of children and the elderly. GRAP3 is applicable in Delhi, so efforts are being made to reduce pollution in some way and primary schools have been closed.
