‘Emerging Trends And Technologies In The Broadcasting Sector’: Key Highlights From TRAI’s Half-Day Symposium

Over 100 national and international participants attended the symposium. The deliberations were divided into three back-to-back sessions.

The Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting and Parliamentary Affairs Dr. L. Murugan inaugurated a half-day symposium titled ‘Emerging Trends and Technologies in the Broadcasting Sector,‘ organized by TRAI on the sidelines of India Mobile Congress (IMC-2024). Key speakers included Chairman of TRAI Anil Kumar Lahoti, Secretary of the Ministry of I&B Sanjay Jaju, and Secretary of TRAI Atul Kumar Chaudhary. This symposium delved into recent technological advancements impacting India’s broadcasting industry.

Transformation Of India’s Broadcasting Sector

In his address, Dr. L. Murugan talked about the transformation facilitated by technology in India’s broadcasting sector, pointing out that the content is the primary focus for the viewers. He further stressed that broadcasting services should be available to vulnerable populations to ensure their inclusion in social, economic, and political spheres.

“We live in a content-driven economy, and India is emerging as a content hub,” he said.

The Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming, Comics (AVGC) sector was additionally highlighted by Dr. Murugan.

Opportunities In Digital Radio, D2M Broadcasting, 5G

In his special address, Sanjay Jaju, Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting highlighted the Ministry’s role in shaping growth-oriented policies for the broadcasting sector. He stressed on the potential of Digital Radio as an ‘affordable mass communication tool in terms of better sound quality.

Jaju also addressed the Direct-to-Mobile (D2M) broadcasting that enables the delivery of content directly to mobile phones. He further discussed about the transformative potential of 5G with immersive technologies like Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR), promising highly engaging broadcasting experiences.

A Stronger Regulatory Framework

Atul Kumar Chaudhary, Secretary of TRAI, highlighted TRAI’s attempt to encourage new deliberations and discussions and addressed the changes required within the regulatory framework in the sector.

Additionally, Shri Anil Kumar Lahoti, Chairman of TRAI Outlined the significant growth trajectory of the Media & Entertainment sector, projected to reach ₹3.08 trillion by 2026, driven by the rapid expansion of new media platforms.

The deliberations were structured into three back-to-back sessions:

  1. Use of Immersive Technologies in Broadcasting Landscape
  2. D2M and 5G Broadcasting: Opportunities and Challenges
  3. Digital Radio Technology: Deployment Strategies in India
