Engineer Rashid Sent Back To Jail As Delhi Court Delays Bail Hearing To Nov 19

On the 14th October Rashid's interim bail was extended on grounds of his father’s health, with a directive to surrender on October 28.

Independent MP of Baramulla Constituency, Jammu and Kashmir, Engineer Rashid who had been given interim bail in a terror-funding case being probed by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) surrendered at Tihar Jail on Monday, when the interim bail period expired. Patiala House Court in New Delhi rescheduled Rashid’s bail hearing a month with the verdict set for November 19.

On the 14th October Rashid’s interim bail was extended on grounds of his father’s health, with a directive to surrender on October 28. Firstly, he was permitted to get anticipatory bail for campaigning for the recent assembly elections in the Jammu and Kashmir. Spread in three phases between September 18 to October 1, the elections ended on October 1 with the verdict in favor of the National Conference-Congress alliance with 48 out of the 90 members of the Assembly.

Rashid’s past legal challenges include a 2005 arrest by Srinagar’s Special Operations Group (SOG) on charge of supporting militants in 2005 and detained for more than three months. He was charged with anti-national activities, and detained in Cargo, Humhama and Raj Bagh jails. However, on merits as well as on humanitarian grounds, the Chief Judicial Magistrate of Srinagar later on proceeded to dropped these charges.

In August 2019, Rashid was arrested one more time under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). While in jail, he filed his nominations for 2024 parliamentary elections and emerged the winner with a lead of 204,0000 against Omar Abdullah the former CM J&K.
