However, in order to discuss solutions for the forthcoming threat, Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently conversed with Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy to assess the preparations ahead of the looming cyclone ‘Michaung’ slated to hit the east coast of India. He directed top officials to ensure comprehensive aid to the state.
Forecasted to strike between Nellore and Machilipatnam on Tuesday morning, Cyclone Michaung, currently brewing over the Southwest Bay of Bengal, is anticipated to intensify while moving northwestwards. It’s projected to reach the Westcentral Bay of Bengal off south Andhra Pradesh and adjoining north Tamil Nadu coasts by Monday forenoon.
Expected to evolve into a ‘severe cyclonic storm’ with sustained wind speeds of 90-100 kmph gusting up to 110 kmph, the cyclone is set to cross the south Andhra Pradesh coast between Nellore and Machilipatnam on Tuesday forenoon. Regions like north coastal Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema, Telangana, and Odisha are likely to witness varying levels of rainfall during this period.
The India Meteorological Department cautioned fishermen against venturing into the sea and urged those currently at sea to return to the coast promptly. The weather office highlighted risks to structures, and potential tree damage, and advised precautions against uprooting of trees.
Anticipated impacts include minor damage to power and communication lines, road disruptions, and potential harm to agricultural crops like paddy, horticultural crops, and orchards.
Additionally, in anticipation of Cyclone Michaung, the East Coast Railway (ECoR) of Indian Railways has canceled 54 trains from December 2 to December 7, 2023, prioritizing passenger safety.
