Mohali: A shocking incident unfolded in Mohali on Tuesday, where a 39-year-old scientist reportedly died after being assaulted by his neighbour. The incident occurred in Sector 66 following an altercation over parking. The victim, identified as Abhishek Swarnkar, originally from Dhanbad in Jharkhand, returned to India recently. The victim was a distinguished scientist who previously worked in Switzerland and returned due to deteriorating health conditions.
Dispute Captured On CCTV
According to reports, Swarnkar was on dialysis after he underwent a kidney transplant a few days back. He lived in a rented apartment in Mohali with his family, who accused their neighbour Monty of attacking him. The suspect, identified as an IT professional, was accused of brutally attacking the victim despite being aware of his poor health. The dispute was caught on CCTV camera, reports added.
Eyewitnesses Confirm ‘Accused Abused First‘
Police said that the fight broke out around 8.30 pm and quickly turned violent. The eyewitnesses said that it was Monty who first abused the victim. Thereafter, he pushed him to the ground and punched him repeatedly. “I heard loud shouting and rushed outside. I saw Monty attacking Abhishek, repeatedly punching him in the chest as he lay on the ground,” TOI quoted a tenant, Roma, as saying.
“When Abhishek lost consciousness, Monty panicked and rushed him to the hospital,” she added. Monty allegedly hit a car while on his way to a private hospital. Meanwhile, Swarnkar was declared dead on arrival. According to SHO Gagandeep Singh, a case was registered based on the family’s complaint.
IISER Condoles The Scientist’s Death
An autopsy is scheduled to be conducted today, and an investigation is underway into the matter. Swarnkar worked at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) in Mohali. The Institute condoled the death of the scientist, stating, “We have lost a brilliant mind. Such an act of violence is unacceptable and strict action should be taken against the accused.”
