India calls for security of diaspora in Australia after Hindu temples were vandalised

New Delhi: The High Commission of India on Thursday has urged the Australian government to ensure safety of Indian diaspora after the incidents of vanadalisation of Hindu temples were reported in Melbourne.

“It has been highlighted to the Australian Government to ensure the safety and security of members of the Indian community and their properties in Australia, and to not allow the use of Australian territory for activities detrimental to the territorial integrity, security and national interest of India,” read the official press release.

India has condmned the rising attacks at the Hindu temples which has now mounted to 3 in Australia’s Melbourne in the past week allegedly by Khalistani supporters.

The commission has also expressed concern over “the frequency and impunity with which the vandals appear to be operating”, calling it alarming.

It also took notice of defacing of the temples’ wall which were defaced with anti-India and Anti-Hindu grafitti. It said that ‘the grafitti glorifies anti-Indian terrorists.’

In an official press release, it levelled the act as mere attempt to sow hatred and division among the peaceful multi-faith and multi-cultural Indian-Australian community.

The commission also highlighted that pro-Khalistan elements aided by proscribed terrorist organisations such as the Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) and other inmical agencies were evident.

Following the incidents, the Australian High Commission in New Delhi has notified that the latter is also concerned over incidents as the authorities have been engagged in carrying out the investigation.

“Like India, Australia is a proud, multicultural country. We have been shocked at the vandalism of two Hindu temples in Melbourne, & Australian authorities are investigating. Our strong support for freedom of expression does not include hate speech or violence,” Australia’s High Commissioner to India Barry O’Farrell tweeted recently.
