ISRO And Health Department Launch Telemedicine Facility For Amarnath Pilgrims At Baltal And Panjtarni Base Hospitals

Utilizing ISRO’s satellite communication technology, the state-of-the-art telemedicine systems now enable on-ground medical teams to connect in real-time with specialist doctors at tertiary care centers.

To enhance healthcare facilities for pilgrims during the ongoing Amarnath Yatra in Kashmir, telemedicine facilities have been successfully installed and made operational at the Base Hospitals in Baltal and Panjtarni. This initiative marks a new era in remote medical care for Yatris, achieved through a collaborative effort between the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the Directorate of Health Services, Kashmir (DHSK).

Utilizing ISRO’s satellite communication technology, the state-of-the-art telemedicine systems now enable on-ground medical teams to connect in real-time with specialist doctors at tertiary care centers. This capability allows for swift diagnosis, expert consultation, and better management of critical cases—especially vital given the challenging and remote terrain of the Yatra route in the Himalayan areas of the Kashmir Valley.

Dr. Siddhant, a cardiologist from PGI who has been deployed for the Amarnath Yatra, told News24 that each telemedicine unit is equipped with a satellite terminal, high-definition video conferencing systems, diagnostic tools, and capabilities for medical data transmission, making high-quality care accessible even at high-altitude locations.

Another doctor, Khalid Hussain, mentioned that for the first time, DHSK is also working to expand this telemedicine infrastructure to four additional Base Hospitals—Holy Cave, Lower Holy Cave, Sheshnag, and Chandanwari—where installation is currently in progress.

This development showcases how space technology is being effectively integrated into public healthcare, particularly in disaster-prone and difficult-to-access areas. It not only enhances the reach and quality of medical services for the thousands of Yatris but also strengthens the overall healthcare infrastructure supporting the pilgrimage.

As part of its comprehensive healthcare strategy for the Yatra, DHSK has deployed over 1,000 medical personnel, including specialists and allied health workers, across all medical camps. Emergency Aid Centres (EACs), Mobile Medical Units, and well-equipped Base Hospitals have been established at key locations.
