A security guard has been arrested by the Kolkata police on Saturday in connection with the gang-rape of a law student. It is the fourth arrest in the case.
Kolkata Police arrested guard
The police arrested the guard two days later after the law student alleged that she was raped by multiple people in the guard room of the college premise of South Calcutta Law College in Kolkata’s Kasba on Wednesday. The 24-year-old law student is a native of South 24 Parganas.
The student also told police that she had been offered a key post in the student union before the alleged assault. Kolkata police said, “Guard of the Law College, Pinaki Banerjee (55) has also been arrested in the case.”
‘Inability of the state government’
Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar said, “Both the incidents (recent and RG Kar rape case) happened inside an educational institution… Inability of the state government to stop these is a pathetic failure… Someone should take responsibility… You say police can’t be everywhere… It must be at least accepted that the government is not able to maintain an environment of safety, and with such failures, they have no right to stay in their post.”

‘Law & order in Bengal has been deteriorating’
Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury slammed the Mamata government, saying: “It demonstrates that law & order in Bengal has been deteriorating from bad to worse. Virtually a semblance of anarchy has been descended in Bengal, as a result of which, even in the law college hostel a girl student had been gangraped…This kind of arrogance, audacity and courage could be gathered only by those who belong to the ruling dispensation. These kinds of heinous criminals are being harboured by the ruling party in Bengal as a result of which we are witnessing sordid incidents.”
