Kolkata Rape-Murder Case: Supreme Court Resumes Hearing, Urges Doctors To Return To Work

The Supreme Court has assured the agitating doctors that no adverse action would be taken once they rejoin.

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court, which resumed hearing the pleas in connection with the Kolkata rape-murder case of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, on Thursday urged the agitating doctors to resume work in the interest of people.

A top court bench led by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud appealed to the agitating doctors while hearing the pleas related to the case. The top court assured them that no adverse action would be taken once they rejoin.

Return To Work: SC To Agitating Doctors

“Once they get back to duty, we will prevail upon authorities to not take adverse action. How will public health infrastructure run if the doctors do not work,” the bench, also comprising Justice J B Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, said.

During the hearing, the Chief Justice also asserted that the National Task Force (NTF) would give resident doctors a representative voice to put forth their grievances.

Earlier, the Federation of Association of Medical Associations of India (FAIMA) and Delhi Medical Association had filed intervention applications seeking the inclusion of resident doctors in the NTF.

SC Warning To West Bengal Govt

The Chief Justice, heading a three-judge Bench, had also earlier issued a stern warning to the West Bengal government against “unleashing” its might on protestors expressing their grief and shock at the brutal crime.

CBI Files Progress Report In Kolkata Rape-Murder Case

Meanwhile, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has also filed a progress report before the Supreme Court this morning in connection with the case. The CBI, meanwhile, grilled former R G Kar Hospital principal Sandip Ghosh for the sixth consecutive day on Wednesday.

The agency sleuths also summoned various other top authorities of the hospital, including its current superintendent and vice-principal Bulbul Mukhopadhyay and her predecessor Sanjay Vasishth, for questioning.

Sandip Ghosh Reaches CBI Office To Join Probe

Sandip Ghosh, former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, reached the Central Bureau of Investigation office in Kolkata on Thursday morning regarding the ongoing probe into the alleged rape and murder case of a trainee doctor.

Following a directive from the Calcutta High Court, the West Bengal Health Department cancelled the appointment of Prof. Sandip Ghosh as the Principal of National Medical College & Hospital.

Ghosh had resigned from his position as principal of RG Kar Medical College, alleging defamation on social media following the rape and murder of a trainee doctor on the hospital premises.

Protests Continue Over Kolkata Rape-Murder Case

The alleged rape and murder of the trainee doctor in a seminar hall of the state-run hospital has sparked nationwide protests. West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose also visited the residence of the victim and met her family.

The medic’s body with severe injury marks was found inside the seminar hall of the hospital’s chest department on August 9. A civic volunteer was arrested by the Kolkata Police in connection with the case the following day.

On August 13, the Calcutta High Court ordered the transfer of the probe from the Kolkata Police to the CBI, which started its investigation on August 14.
