Maharashtra: Tragic landslide claims 13 lives, several trapped in Raigad

Raigad Landslide: Raigad Police on Thursday informed that the total of 13 people died including one rescuer following the landslide which occurred at Irshalwadi village in Khalapur tehsil in Maharashtra’s Raigad district.

According to a senior police official, “12 bodies have been retrieved from the debris in Irshalwadi, Raigad; also, one rescuer died of cardiac arrest. Total of 13 deaths till now.”

However, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde arrived at the scene of the tragedy to review and take stock of the relief and rescue efforts in the Raigad district.

Maharashtra CM expressed grief over the tragic incident and announced an aid of five lakh rupees to the families of the deceased, said officials.

“CM Eknath Shinde announced an ex- gratia of Rs 5 lakh to the families of the deceased,” as per the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), Maharashtra.

In the wake of a devastating incident, the Raigad Police has taken swift action by establishing a control room to coordinate rescue efforts. As of now, they have successfully rescued 22 individuals from the site of the incident.

“We will get a better idea of the situation when the daylight comes. Presently over 100 people from Police and district administration are involved in the rescue operation and we are getting help from NDRF, locals and some NGOs too,” ANI quoted Raigad Police as saying.

In response to the devastating landslide that struck Raigad district amidst heavy rainfall, Union Home Minister Amit Shah promptly reached out to Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. Expressing concern for the affected residents, Shah assured the Chief Minister of the central government’s support in the rescue efforts.

To bolster the rescue operation, Shah announced the deployment of four National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams. These specialized teams will work tirelessly to locate and rescue those who are still trapped under the debris. The collaboration between the central and state governments aims to provide swift and effective assistance to the affected communities during this challenging time.
