Maharashtra Bandh: Bombay HC Restrains Parties And Persons From Calling Shutdown

Bombay High Court issues restraining order to political parties and persons from calling for Maharashtra Bandh.

Maharashtra: The Bombay High Court issued a restraining order against any political party or person from calling for a Maharashtra strike on Friday. Maharashtra Bandh was previously announced by MVA (Maha Vikas Aghadi) against the sexual assault of two 4-year-old girl children in Badlapur. However, the Opposition bloc MVA has still not confirmed whether they will call off the bandh or not.

Maharashtra Bandh was announced for August 24 by the former CM of Maharashtra Uddhav Thackeray. But now after Bombay High Court’s ruling, no political party or person can call for the bandh. No notice was issued regarding the closure of schools and colleges in Maharashtra following the announcement of the strike. Instructions for strict prevention of bandh were laid out to the Maharashtra Government by a bench led by Chief Justice D K Upadhyaya and Justice Amit Borkar.

‘Not A Political Move’, Says Uddhav Thackeray

While hearing out pleas for the bandh, Bombay HC said that the state shall take all measures to prevent any political party or person from calling for a shutdown. Uddhav Thackeray said earlier in the day that Maharashtra Bandh is against ‘perversion’. He cleared that the bandh called by the opposition bloc MVA is not a political motive and urged people across the state to participate in the cause. He demanded on Friday that the police case be withdrawn against Badlapur protestors. they will hit the streets in case their demands are not fulfilled, he added.

Advocates Subhash Jha and Gunaratna Sadavarte filed the petition in the court and called MVA’s move illegal. State Advocate General Birendra Saraf stated that the Maharashtra Government is ready to take all steps to protect human lives and avoid damage and destruction to property. The court is yet to issue a detailed order on the case on Friday.
