After which, the Indian Army ran a rescue operation overnight and evacuated nearly 75,000 civilians.

“Internet services suspended in Manipur for five days amid incidents of fighting amongst youths, volunteers of different communities as a rally was organised by All Tribals Students Union (ATSU) Manipur in protest against the demand for inclusion of Meitei/Meetei in the ST category,” said the state government.

In a video shared by the news agency ANI, an army personnel was seen calming down the civilians and assuring them protection.

“This is the main road – 10 metres to the right is my full column. We are here for the night. Don’t worry,” said the officer.

The incident took place during the ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ called by the All Tribal Student Union Manipur (ATSUM) in the Torbung area of Churachandpur district.

The rally was called for over the order of Manipur High Court last month that directed the BJP government to consider the inclusion of Meitis in the list of Scheduled Tribes (ST).

Manipur CM’s Asssurance

“Since 24 hours, some incidents of clashes and vandalism have been reported in some places. These incidents are a result of a prevailing misunderstanding between two sections of our society. The state government is taking all steps to control the situation.
