Manipur Crisis: MPs hold overnight protest in Parliament, seek PM Modi’s response

The Oppositions parties have consistently claimed that Prime Minister Modi is avoiding to speak on the Manipur crisis in the Parliament.

New Delhi: The Monsoon session of Parliament is facing turbulent times as a group of Rajya Sabha MPs, led by Aam Aadmi Party’s Sanjay Singh, engaged in an intense overnight protest within the Parliament complex. The protest, aimed at drawing attention to the Manipur ethnic violence, is set to continue until 10:45 am on Tuesday.

Opposition demands PM Modi’s statement 

The opposition bloc is vehemently demanding a statement from Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding the ongoing Manipur crisis before initiating any discussion in the House. As a show of protest, several opposition members gathered around the Gandhi Statue, holding ‘Save Manipur’ placards, and remained there throughout the night.

Later in the day, the opposition leaders are expected to convene in Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s chamber to strategize their plan of action concerning the Manipur crisis.

AAP leader Sanjay Singh suspended from the Upper House 

Aam Aadmi Party’s Sanjay Singh has been suspended from the Rajya Sabha for the remainder of the session due to his non-compliance with the Chair’s directives. Opposition parties have strongly criticized this decision and urged the chairman to reconsider Singh’s suspension.

Furthermore, the Congress party has consistently claimed that Prime Minister Modi is avoiding to speak on the Manipur crisis in the Parliament. In response, the BJP accused the opposition of evading discussion to prevent the truth from coming to light.

Amit Shah urges opposition to allow debate

Minister of Home Affairs, Amit Shah, expressed his willingness to engage in a debate on the Manipur issue in Lok Sabha. However, he asserted that the opposition is obstructing the discussion. Shah urged the protesting leaders to allow the debate to ensure that the truth reaches the people of India.

Modi’s silence not letting Parliament function, says Jairam Ramesh

Congress MP Jairam Ramesh addressed the issue, highlighting the government’s refusal to issue a statement by Prime Minister Modi. He emphasized that this silence has resulted in the non-functioning of Parliament for the third consecutive day.
