Union Cabinet Meeting: Big Gift for Uttarakhand
In today’s (March 5, 2025) Union Cabinet meeting, the Modi government approved a big project for Uttarakhand. The government has given approval for a ropeway at Kedarnath Dham. A 12.9 km long ropeway will be built from Sonprayag to Kedarnath, costing ₹4081 crore. The National Highway Logistic Management will build it. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said, “The biggest benefit will be that the current 8-9 hour journey will now take just 36 minutes. The ropeway will carry 36 people at a time.”

Benefits for Local Businesses
This project will help boost the Char Dham Yatra, benefiting local businesses and growing the economy in the region. It will also help keep a steady number of pilgrims throughout the year, reducing pressure on resources in the first two months. This project will create more jobs during the pilgrimage season.
Ropeway Project for Hemkund Sahib
The Kedarnath ropeway project will be run under the Uttarakhand Ropeway Act, 2014, which provides a legal framework for licensing, operations, safety, and fare determination. Another project is for a ropeway at Hemkund Sahib, which will cost ₹2730 crore. This ropeway will make it easier for people to travel to Hemkund Sahib and the Valley of Flowers.
Government Decision for Farmers
The Cabinet also made a decision to support farmers. The government has approved ₹3880 crore to improve animal health and prevent diseases. The focus will be on two major diseases: Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) and Brucellosis.
