Muharram 2025: Muharram, one of the four sacred months in Islam, marks the beginning of the Islamic New Year. The day commemorates the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, who died at the Battle of Karbala in 680 AD. The government has marked July 6, as the tentative date for Ashura, the 10th day of Muharram.
However, since the Islamic calendar is based on the moon, Ashura may also fall on Monday, July 7, depending on the moon sighting.
Here’s What We Know
If Ashura is observed on Monday, some states like Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Telangana, and West Bengal may declare a public holiday on that day instead of Sunday. The final decision will be made by local or state authorities.
All central and state government offices, schools, colleges, post offices, and many private organisations across India will remain closed on the occasion. Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Telangana, and West Bengal are likely to release official notifications soon. Parents and students are advised to stay updated through local school circulars and district-level announcements for confirmation of closures.
On the occasion of Muharram, Prime Minister Narendra Modi acknowledged the profound sacrifices of Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS), highlighting his unwavering commitment to righteousness. He noted that Imam Hussain’s life and martyrdom serve as a powerful source of inspiration, encouraging people to stand firmly for truth and justice even in the face of immense adversity.
PM Modi wrote on X, “The sacrifices made by Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS) emphasise his commitment to righteousness. He inspires people to uphold truth in the face of adversity.”
For Shia Muslims, Muharram is a time of deep mourning and remembrance of justice, sacrifice, and standing against oppression. For Sunni Muslims, it is a time of reflection, prayer, and fasting, as Prophet Moses (Musa) was believed to have been saved from Pharaoh on this day.
