The Government of India has introduced a new facility that allows citizens to drive legally without carrying a physical driving license. This doesn’t mean a driving license isn’t required—it simply means you no longer need to carry a hard copy at all times. By using two government apps, mParivahan and DigiLocker, you can securely store digital versions of your documents on your phone and present them to traffic police or other authorities when necessary.
With The Help Of DigiLocker app
This application is developed by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY). DigiLocker is linked to your Aadhaar card, and you can store digital copies of many of your documents in it. Having stored a driving license connected to the transport department within DigiLocker ensures complete legal validity. You can present your digital driving license to the traffic police by accessing the DigiLocker app at the time they stop your vehicle to request your license.
Both the Supreme Court and the Central Government have clarified that the digital copy of the documents stored in DigiLocker has the same legal recognition as the physical document.
With The Help Of mParivahan App
This application, released by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, not only provides the facility to show the driving license, but also gives information about vehicle registration, insurance, fitness certificate, etc. If you have entered your driving license number in the mParivahan app, the app shows its digital version in your profile. With this, you can immediately show the license to the police. The app has the option of a QR code, through which the officers can immediately verify the documents and check them. You can access them in the ‘Saved Documents’ section even without an internet connection.
