FSSAI Labels Packaged Drinking Water As ‘High-Risk Food’: Here’s What It Means

Packed Drinking water has been classified as a 'high-risk food category', necessitating mandatory annual audits to ensure safety and compliance with health standards.

Following the government decision, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has introduced new regulations, classifying packaged drinking and mineral water as a ‘High-Risk Food Category.’

This classification will subject these products to mandatory inspections and third-party audits, aimed at improving safety and quality standards.

In October the government decided to remove the requirement for Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) certification for packaged water.

Under the updated rules, all manufacturers of packaged drinking and mineral water will now undergo annual, risk-based inspections prior to obtaining a licence or registration. These inspections are intended to enforce stricter safety measures for products deemed high-risk.

In addition, businesses in this category will be required to undergo annual audits conducted by third-party food safety agencies recognised by FSSAI. This measure is expected to enhance consumer confidence by ensuring higher safety standards.

The packaged drinking water industry had previously advocated for streamlined regulations, calling for the removal of the dual certification requirement from both BIS and FSSAI.
