Tirupati Laddu Row: ‘Keep Gods Away From Politics,’ Says Supreme Court

The Supreme Court remarked that Gods should be kept away from politics.

The Supreme Court on Monday heard the petitions regarding allegations that ghee used to make laddus at Tirupati temple in Andhra Pradesh contained animal fat. The court questioned, why did the Chief Minister go to the media when a Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe was already ordered.

It further noted that Gods should remain untouched by politics. The court expressed its opinion regarding the timing of CM Naidu’s announcement of a lab report indicating traces of fish oil, beef tallow, and lard in ghee.

The SC has told the Andhra Pradesh government’s counsel that the lab reports indicated that the ghee put to test was the rejected ghee.

Senior Advocate Rajshekhar Rao, representing Subramanian Swamy, said he was present as a devotee and that the press statements about contamination in prasadam could disturb communal harmony and give rise to various issues. It further noted that the ghee sample could have contained soyabean oil. This doesn’t mean fish oil was used, it remarked.

In its judgment, the Supreme Court said that it is prima facie of the view that the investigations into the matter were on. It also called out the statements of high constitutional functionary and said it could affect the public sentiment.

The Supreme Court heard a batch of petitions seeking a court-monitored investigation into the allegations of animal fat in the preparation of laddu at Tirupati Temple, today.
