After Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s coalition, the NDA led in a majority of seats. However, it was a tough victory than expected. Early figures indicated that the NDA secured between 306 and 365 seats. Despite this, the magical figure of 272 remained elusive.

Several political parties, including the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) led by Mayawati, Biju Janata Dal (BJD) led by Naveen Patnaik, and the Bharat Rashtriya Samiti (BRS) led by Chandrashekhar Rao, contested independently. These regional powerhouses, known for their strongholds, failed to secure any local seats this time.

Mayawati’s BSP, which had previously allied with the Samajwadi Party (SP), faced setbacks. Their vote share declined to 9.33%, falling even below the Congress’s 9.46%. In the previous election, BSP had won 10 seats with a 19.4% vote share.

While the NDA emerged as the largest party in terms of vote share (41.37%), it fell short of its 2019 performance. The SP, in alliance with the BSP, won more seats (37) with a 33.59% vote share. The Congress, despite a modest 6.4% vote share, secured six seats.

The 2024 elections showcased the shifting dynamics of Indian politics. Regional parties played a crucial role, and the magic number of 272 remained elusive. As the dust settles, the nation awaits the formation of the next government.
