The 71-km stretch of the 260-km Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway, which is open to the public within Karnataka, has received an update regarding the ban on two-wheeler entry. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has prohibited two-wheeler access to the Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway within Karnataka’s borders, as reported by the Times of India. This decision by the NHAI follows an accident that occurred on the route on Sunday night.
Why The Entry Of Two-Wheelers Got Banned On The Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway?
NHAI implemented this restriction following a fatal accident that claimed four lives on Sunday night in Bangarpet taluk, Kolar. Patrolling teams have been ordered to block entry and exit points for two-wheelers to prevent their use on the expressway. Riders will be informed of the ban through signboards placed across the expressway, according to a statement from an NHAI official.
As quoted by Times of India, NHAI official mentioned that, “A bike entered the expressway from the wrong side and collided with a four-wheeler. Entry of bikes is barred on expressways in the country. We urge two-wheeler riders not to use this expressway. Expressways are designed for driving at a maximum of 120 kmph. It is not safe for bikers to use the stretch when other vehicles go at high speed. They put their lives and other road users at risk. After this stretch was unofficially opened for motorists, many bikers hit the road for the new experience, but lives are precious. Bikers should avoid this road.”
