Amid heightened tensions between India and Pakistan following the missile strikes on terror sites in Pakistan and PoJK on 7th May, the US Embassy in India has urged American citizens to refrain from traveling to Jammu and Kashmir. Meanwhile, the US Embassy has asked its citizens to monitor social media for updates. Additionally, they must enroll in the Smart Traveller Enrollment Program (STEP) for security alerts.
In a security alert issued on Wednesday, the US Embassy stated, “As advised in the India Travel Advisory, U.S. citizens should avoid travel to the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir. As stated in the April 23, 2025, Security Alert, US government personnel are prohibited from traveling to Jammu and Kashmir.” American citizens in India are advised to inform their family and close ones about their safety and ensure the validity of their passports. Meanwhile, the US Embassy also informed that they are open for regular business. The alert also mentioned the ongoing flight disruptions across India.
Various Indian Airports Shut For Commercial Ops
About 25 airports in India, mostly in the northern region , have been closed for regular passenger flights after India carried out strikes on terrorist bases in Pakistan early Wednesday. These airports are expected to stay closed for commercial flights until around 5:30 AM on Saturday, May 10. Indian airlines have cancelled all flights to these airports at least until then. However, these airports will still be used for military and defence flights during this time.
The disruptions happened because flights to North India were temporarily stopped at some airports as part of increased national security under Operation Sindoor, said officials.
