Uttarakhand Set To Become India’s First State To Enact Uniform Civil Code, Panel Submits Draft To CM Dhami

The nine-member expert panel appointed by the government and headed by Former state chief secretary Shatrughna Singh handed over the final draft to CM Dhami.

Uttarakhand may become the first state to implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) on November 9. The committee tasked to draft the rules for the UCC submitted its report on Friday.

Draft Submitted To Uttarakhand Chief Minister

If media reports are to be believed, the final draft of rules and regulations submitted to Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami contains details of matters pertaining to the registrations of marriages, divorces, live-in relationships, births, deaths, and also succession rules.

Expert Panel Hands Over Final Draft

The nine-member expert panel appointed by the government and headed by former Chief Secretary Shatrughna Singh handed over the final draft to CM Dhami. The state government will soon present the final draft to the Cabinet for approval.

While speaking to the media, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said, “Two days before the state assembly elections, on behalf of my party, I had presented a proposal before the people of the state that as soon as we form the government, the first decision of the government will be to introduce the UCC. I give all credit to the people of the state who entrusted us with their votes.”

The report on the Uniform Civil Code, drafted by the expert panel headed by Justice (retd) Ranjana Prakash Desai, was submitted to the state government in February 2024.

The panel led by Singh finalised the draft on October 7 and submitted it for printing. The draft will now be reviewed by the Uttarakhand government before presenting it to the Cabinet.

Uttarakhand was separated from Uttar Pradesh on November 9, 2000.
