Vadodara Bridge Collapse: The death toll in the Gambhira bridge collapse in Vadodara district of Gujarat has risen to 15. Rescue teams have recovered four more bodies from the river on Thursday. Vadodara Collector Anil Dhameliya confirmed the death toll as 15 and stated that four people are still missing. The rescue operation has entered its second day. The NDRF and SDRF are jointly conducting search and rescue operations, extending up to 4 km downstream.
The Tragedy
The tragic incident occurred on Wednesday, when a portion of the bridge, which connects Anand and Vadodara via Padra, suddenly collapsed, plunging vehicles and commuters into the waters below. Multiple vehicles, including two trucks, two vans, and an auto-rickshaw, fell into the Mahisagar River.
District Collector Anil Dhameliya visited the site and provided an update on the ongoing rescue operations. He said, “The death toll stands at 15 now with recovery of 3 more bodies today. 4 persons remain missing. NDRF and SDRF are conducting search and rescue operations even till 4 km downstream. Two vehicles are stuck in the sludge at the incident site. We are seeking details from the public on those vehicles. There is rainfall, and the water level has risen in the river.”

Gujarat CM Announces Compensation
Earlier, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel announced a compensation of Rs 4 lakh for the families of those who died in the Gambhira bridge collapse incident. He also announced Rs 50,000 for the injured.
CM Patel posted on X, “The collapse of a span of the Gambhira Bridge, connecting Anand and Vadodara, has caused an accident that is deeply distressing to the heart. The state government stands with full compassion alongside every family affected by this tragedy. The state government will provide assistance of 4 lakh rupees to the next of kin of the deceased. Additionally, each person injured in the accident will receive assistance of Rs 50,000, and all treatment arrangements will also be provided by the state government.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) for the kin of the deceased.
Meanwhile, Vadodara SP Rohan Anand stated that a 10-15 metre slab in the middle of the bridge had collapsed, which led to the tragic incident.
“We came to know that a 10-15 metres slab in the middle of the bridge collapsed. There were two vehicles on the bridge that got stranded. Two trucks, two pickups and a rickshaw fell into the river below. Locals and rescue teams started rescuing them,” he said.
