Haveri: Increasing apprehensions over ownership of land again assumed a wave of tension at Kadakol village in Karnataka’s Haveri district on Wednesday night. Concerned about rumors that their homes would be claimed by the Waqf Board, the villagers reportedly went on the rampage, ransacking the property and houses of a certain community and resulting in injuries to five people.
The police said that the situation has been brought under control and there are no further issues reported from Kadakol, a village in Savanur taluk. The accident expanded to seriously injure one person, who was shifted to the KIMS hospital in Hubballi and is reported to be in stable condition. Reports indicate that said miscreants chucked stones, attacked homes and houses, and destroyed a parked motorcycle during the disturbance.

District Superintendent of Police Anshu Kumar said about 200 cops, including four platoons of Karnataka State Reserve Police (KSRP), were deployed to manage the crowd. The police have arrested 32 people for interrogation.
The event has led to political reactions; the head of the Ministry of Waqf Minister B.Z. Zameer Ahmed Khan accused the BJP of spreading misleading information among the local farmers. He assured the villagers that their lands would not be seized and condemned the violence in Kadakol, which has no history of communal conflict.
Local unrest reportedly began following unverified claims that properties near a village would be declared as Waqf property to be seized shortly and will be acquired soon. In response to these issues, Deputy Commissioner Vijay Mahantesh said that officials have been advised to cross-check property documents provided by the District Waqf Board to understand the actual ownership of the property.

Former Chief Minister and Haveri MP Basavaraj Bommai demanded the state government withdraw the notices served to individual farmers and eradicate the classifications of the land as belonging to waqf assets.
However, the Haveri District Waqf Board has taken an audacious stand in the district and claimed ownership of Haveri District Court premises, which sits on a 20-acre land, and 19-acre Hindu burial ground in Tadas village of Shiggaon taluk in the district.
