What Is Su-30MKI? HAL To Restart Nashik Plant For Production And Upgradation Of Su-30MKI Jets

The Air Force is preparing to upgrade 84 existing ‘Su-30MKI’ jets which is under the ‘Super Sukhoi’ Programme. 

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is going to restart its Nashik Plant Operations to strengthen India’s defence manufacturing and operational capabilities.

The process is due o the, major production order of 1.3 billion US dollar. This was approves in September 2023. This project got approved for manufacturing of 12 new Sukhoi Su-30MKI fighter jets.

The Nashik plant which was established for production of Su-30MKI, will be resuming its operations to meet the immediate production need. This project or production will boost PM Modi’s Make in India initiative.

About Su-30MKI

Su-30MKI is a multirole fighter jets. It is jointly developed by Sukhoi Design Bureau and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited. It has maximum range of 8000 km with two refuelings. The Air Force is preparing to upgrade 84 existing ‘Su-30MKI’ jets which is under the ‘Super Sukhoi’ Programme.

The process for upgradation is approved by Defence Acquisition Council but it is waiting for the final clearance from the Cabinet Committee on Security. The process of  upgradation is set to cost around Rs 63,000 crore.

Update In The ‘Su-30MKI’

The ‘Super Sukhoi’ program is to enhance the combat capabilities of these aircraft. This upgraded jets will have advanced radar system which have range of 1. to 1.7 times greater than the current models. This upgraded program also have infrared search and track sensors which are developed by Bharat Electronic Limited. The new update brings cutting-edge mission computers.

The new update brings upgraded cockpit layout and advanced weapon system which helps the jets to operate in the high threat environment. The Su-30MKI will get updated to support the weapons made in India.

How The Update Benefits Indian Defence System?

The revival of the plant and upgradation of the Jets not only boosts IAF’s operational strength but will also help HAL’s manufacturing and technological expertise.

The project will bring development and employment within the defence sector. The program will help the nation’s role in defence and security. This will play an important role in modernization of strategy in India’s military.

The deliveries from the Nashik Plant is expected to commence in few years.
