Meet Deven Bharti, IPS Officer Who Probed 26/11 Attacks, Appointed As New Mumbai Police Commissioner

Deven Bharti, a senior police officer from Bihar, has been made the new Mumbai Police Commissioner.

Senior IPS officer Deven Bharti will be the new Police Commissioner of Mumbai. Before this, he was the Special Police Commissioner of Mumbai. He is a 1994 batch IPS officer and has served the longest as Joint Commissioner (Law and Order) in Mumbai.

The current Police Commissioner, IPS Vivek Phansalkar, is retiring today as his term comes to an end. Deven Bharti will take over his position. Phansalkar became the Police Commissioner of Mumbai on July 1, 2022.

Vivek Phansalkar Given Guard of Honour

As per Mumbai Police tradition, Vivek Phansalkar was given a Guard of Honour on his last day in office. After stepping down, senior IPS officers at the police headquarters came to say goodbye to him. A special tradition was also followed, where the retiring officer is made to sit in an open jeep, which is then pulled with a rope by the police up to the gate of the headquarters.

Who is Deven Bharti ?

Deven Bharti is from Darbhanga, Bihar. He completed his graduation from the Delhi School of Economics. In his nearly 30-year career, he has held many key positions in the Mumbai Police, including DCP (Zone 7), DCP (Crime Branch), Additional Police Commissioner (Crime Branch), and Joint Police Commissioner (Law and Order).

Played Key Role in 26/11 Mumbai Attack Investigation

Bharti played an important role in investigating several major cases, including the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks. He also led the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS). For his service, he was awarded the President’s Police Medal in 2023.

Deven Bharti is known for his leadership, strategic thinking, and effective crime control. As soon as he takes charge as Mumbai Police Commissioner, he is expected to share his vision for the police force and law and order in the city.
