R. Ashwin received a major honor on the day of April 28 when India recognized his cricketing achievements. The former international cricketer Ashwin received the fourth-highest civilian recognition in India named Padma Shri last year when he ended his international career. President Droupadi Murmu conducted the Padma Shri award ceremony for him at Rashtrapati Bhavan on April 28.
Ashwin Joins an Elite List
Prime Minister Narendra Modi joined other important figures when he attended the special ceremony on this particular day. Ashwin stands as the latest among Indian professional cricketers who earned the Padma Shri recognition from the Indian government. Among Indian cricketers he earned the 40th position in receiving the Padma Shri. Sachin Tendulkar and Zaheer Khan along with Gautam Gambhir obtained similar recognition before Ashwin received it. At the same Padma Award ceremony Indian hockey star R. Sreejesh received recognition. Gurcharan Singh received the honor as a cricket coach in 2023.

The Indian cricket world considers R. Ashwin to be one of the greatest spin bowlers in their cricket history. Through his outstanding play he enabled Team India to win memorable matches throughout his long international career. On December 29 2022 Ashwin finished his participation in international cricket following the Boxing Day Test at Melbourne Cricket Ground last year before making his retirement official.
The cricketer continues to play professional matches for the IPL although he made his retirement decision. He plays for the Chennai Super Kings squad in IPL 2025 where his years of experience benefit the tournament. Ashwin has achieved 5 wickets in IPL 2025 during his 7 appearances thus far. His performance in the current season fails to stand out while remaining unproductive for the CSK team this season.
